LATE 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY BRITISH MARITIME WATERCOLOR, W/WOODEN DINGY,
SLOOPS, FIGURES & URBAN LANDSCAPE NEXT TO HARBOR OR COVE(Reframed in 1960's
thin profile frame, unsigned & w/unbroken back dust cover)
This really wonderful late 19th - early 20th century British maritime
watercolor, looks to be a depiction of the English seacoast and of a maritime,
fishing village, with wooden dingy in the foreground, full of netting and sail
cloth, while another dingy and two larger wooden sloops or fishing boats are
moored in a shallow tidal pool of a cove or the outskirts of a harbor in the
background. Further in the distance and in the haze can be seen the faint
buildings of a village or city, with municipal towers of buildings, factories
and steeples of churches in the background, beyond the water and inlets of the
ocean cove. A lone figure, perhaps a fisherman in blue trousers is perched in
front of the wooden dingy and two other figures are sitting on a grassy knoll
overlooking the harbor. The colors remain vivid and saturated, which is what I
believe makes this watercolor a particularly well-preserved one. In the British
tradition, a preoccupation with draughtsmanship and artistic skill are
showcased in this work, with wonderful articulation of the water itself, the
array of boats, urban early industrial landscape and figures. (*There are 3
faint creases running diagonally in the paper, not tears, which are barely
noticeable. These were most likely 'pressed' and blotted back, when the
watercolor was reframed in its later 1960's thin-profile frame and put under
non-glare glass. I would suggest for the new custodian of the piece to reframe
the watercolor in an appropriate period frame (English) and to replace the
non-glare glass with real, reflective traditional glass or a piece of period,
antique glass. The very faint creases, the result of the piece being most
likely 'pushed' out of frame by another object, are not fatal and would be
considered extremely minor. The photos suggest as much.) A lovely and
remarkably vivid early British maritime watercolor for your consideration.
Beautiful.
DIMENSIONS:12 ½" Width x 10 ½" Height (frame)8" Width x 5" Height (image)
CONDITION:Very Good/Excellent overall vintage condition. This much earlier
British maritime watercolor painting was reframed in a later 1960's
thin-profile wooden frame with non-glare glass and still has an unbroken back
dust cover from that period. It has not been opened or touched.
