KATSU KAISHU (1823-1899) was a Japanese statesman and naval engineer during
the late Tokugawa shogunate and early Meiji period. He was born in Tokyo. He
mastered Western studies through Dutch and went to the United States as captain
of the Kanrin Maru in 1860. During the Boshin War, he negotiated with Saigo
Takamori (1828-1877) and successfully opened Edo Castle through a bloodless
surrender.
YAMAOKA TESSHU (1836-1888) was a famous swordsman and politician from the end
of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He played an important role in the Meiji
Restoration. He learned swordsmanship from Yamaoka Seizan (1829-1855) and
married his younger sister.

TAKAHASHI DEISHU (1835-1903) was a samurai and swordsman from the last days of
the Tokugawa shogunate to the Meiji period. He was the brother-in-law of
Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888). After the battle of Toba and Fushimi, he guarded
Tokugawa Yoshinobu (1837-1913), the 15th and last shogun of the Tokugawa
shogunate.
They are called the Bakumatu San Shu (Three "Shu" of the end of the Edo
period)".
