Owen Rutter's manuscript archive for his 1935 edition of the letters from Sir James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, to Miss Angela (later Baroness) Burdett Coutts, including many letters not used in the published book. A unique and important collection.
Description: A unique and important collection of manuscript material from Rutter's 1935 collection of the correspondence between Sir James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, and Miss Angela (later Baroness) Burdett Coutts.
The collection comprises several hundred pages of transcripts by Owen Rutter of letters, many of which were not eventually included in the published book, together with original handwritten manuscripts of Owen Rutter's running commentary on the letters.
Groups of letters and the relevant manuscript commentaries are collected into groups with paper clips, now a little rusty (see pictures). Also included in the archive is Hutchinson's four page prospectus for the book. Total weight of the archive is 1.7kg.
This archive formed part of the collection of the great bibliographer George Locke, and includes his one-page summary of its content. A unique, museum-quality archive.
Owen Rutter (1888-1944) was the owner of the Golden Cockerel Press, and the outstanding travel writer of his generation, who wrote extensively about Sarawak and its White Rajahs.
Provenance: We have acquired many items from the collection of the celebrated bibliographer and book dealer George Locke, who sadly died in 2019.
